The
Donkey Sanctuary is located near the airport. When we visited
Bonaire in 2003, the donkeys were "running wild" throughout the island.
Now most of them are guests at the donkey sanctuary.
There are over 200 donkeys in the sanctuary. The ones we met
were pretty friendly.
There is also an iguana pen. We walked inside and within a few
minutes we were surrounded by iguanas. They seemed to be hungry.
It was pretty weird being charged by big fat iguanas. We left the
pen in a hurry!
Our room at the Bellafonte had some beautiful pieces of art from the local
art gallery.
The Cinnamon Art Gallery is another fun thing to do while in Bonaire.
It is located downtown just off of the main street.
If you drive north of Karpata, toward Bopec, you'll end up at Goto
Lake. This was a very pretty spot. There is a vantage point
where you can park your car and see the entire lake. There are
numerous pink flamingos that call the lake their home.
On the way back from Rincon, you'll see a sign that points towards
the ocean and says "Indian Inscriptions". We followed the dirt
road. It winds along the ocean to some cliffs. The
inscriptions were easily visible.
The southern portion of Bonaire is where salt is harvested. The
salt is used for roads and water softeners.
