Washington/Slagbaai park is part of the
STINAPA
environmental protection system. The park consists of two dirt
road routes. We took the "longer" route which winds along the
ocean. If you purchase a scuba dive or snorkeling tag then
admission to the park is free. The longer "yellow" route takes
about three hours to complete so be sure to leave ample time to see the
park.
The roads throughout the park are not paved. They get pretty
hairy in certain places. You don't need a 4-wheel drive, but a
truck with high clearance is a necessity.
The road winds along the ocean where you can see some pretty
incredible geology. The picture on the right was one of the
prettiest spots. It was called Boka Kokolishi.
Near the northern point is an abandoned lighthouse. It sits up
on a hill. Just past the lighthouse is Malmok. This is the
northern most part of Bonaire.
Malmok is the ruins of a research center.
When we entered the park, the ranger told us to "drive right straight
through the water". It had rained a few days earlier, so there
were numerous places in the road where it looked like there was deep
standing water. But we did what he said and didn't have a problem
with the mud puddles.
Toward the end of the drive you will see a beautiful house right
along the water. It is called Boka Slagbaai. It is a perfect
place to have lunch. You'll also see lots of pink flamingos in the
park.
