Curacao Trip Report

Curacao is a very arid Caribbean island which is part of the ABC (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao) chain. Curacao has a little bit of everything. It has very good scuba diving. |
Curacao General Information
While in Curacao we stayed at the Lions Dive Resort. The room was OK, nothing special, but it was in a good location. The highlight of the place is their bar called Rumors.
Right on the beach, and everyday they have an Amstel Happy Hour! (Which is brewed on Curacao with seawater) |

Curacao did not have many beaches. Great place to go scuba diving, but it didn't have the nice beaches that are found in Aruba. This was one of the nicer beaches. Not really a good place for snorkeling either because the depth drops off fast, so there are lots of walls but not much coral near the shore. |
Curacao is very arid. Cactus and scrub brush can be found everywhere. |

If you are on Curacao you should visit the Hato Caves. It is a great place to cool off when it is hot outside. |
The Hato caves are a nice destination. There are guided tours through the caves. Lots of history and very interesting. |

The caves are lighted for dramatic effects. |
Curacao Underwater Park
We swam with sharks, rays and turtles at the Curacao Underwater Park. Overall the experience was enjoyable, although not very realistic. But would we do it again? Yes, it was one of those things you will remember all of your life. . . |

The cove is only about 20 feet deep. On one side there are sharks, on the other are turtles, and swimming all over the place are fish and rays! |

We had an underwater photographer follow us around. He did a very good job and we got the negatives! |
The sharks are on the other side of plexi-glass. Even though you are "safe" behind the glass, it is pretty nerve racking the first time a shark opens up their mouth a few inches from your hand. |

The rays were pretty friendly. Especially when you have food in your hand! |
That ray really likes Carroll |

There was also a place to feed turtles. They were more aggressive than the sharks! |
Willemstead
Willemstead has lots of nice colorful buildings. It is the central hub of Curacao. It is very picturesque and busy. |

There are two "sides" of Willemstead. The sides are called Punda and Otrabanda. The Punda side has the majority of commerce. |
The Queen Emma Bridge is what joins both sides of Willemstead. This is one of the most famous bridges in the Caribbean. |

The bridge "splits" when ships come into
port. It is really fun to watch the bridge split. The bridge "splits" when ships come into port. It is really fun to watch the bridge split. |
When the bridge splits you can jump on a ferry boat to get to the Otrabanda. (Other side) |
