In July 2003, Jon and Dick took a trip to the resort town of Manzanillo, Mexico. It is a port town on the Pacific coast between Puerta Vallerta and Alcapulco. The scenery and beaches are beautiful - the town was a working port. |
Manzanillo General Information
If relaxing, beaching, fishing and golfing are activities you enjoy, you'll like Manzanillo. If you like shopping, hot night life and non stop action, you should consider a different destination. We stayed at an all inclusive hotel, the Sierra Manzanillo, located right on the beach. The service staff was friendly, the Corona beer cold and the beach very nice. The food was all right for buffet style but the "upscale" restaurant was disappointing. The 19 story hotel offered many amenities and we enjoyed our stay. The only downside was it is a favorite Mexican family resort and there were many, many children, translate as: mucho, mucho ninos y ninas. If you are looking for a nice family place with many children's activities, this is the place. If you are looking for a peace and quiet without children, book a different location. |

Golfing and Fishing
Manzanillo is a great spot for outdoor sports. We played two rounds of golf. One at Las Hadas and another at Club Santiago . We booked a sport fishing expedition through one of the hotel employees. He even picked us up in the morning and took us to the docks for a very enjoyable day out on the ocean. We saw dolphins, a sailfish (didn't hook him though), turtles and large vessels headed for exotic ports. The catch included a barracuda type fish and two blue fin tuna. Our guides / pilots were friendly and the price was about what you would expect for charter boat about $60 US. We had other quotes of up $150 US so be sure to negotiate for a good price. |

The golf was fantastic. Las Hadas, a resort course, was more expensive with green fees and cart running about $80 US. Club Santiago was a little less at $50 US.The courses were un-crowded, the scenery and wildlife magnificent. The highlight of the trip occurred on number 18 at Las Hadas, a par 3 over the ocean. Jon lands safely on the fringe, pin high. Dick hits two Top Flites into the Pacific Ocean. |

Colima
An important aspect of any travel is to see and enjoy some of the countryside. We took an interesting tour to Colima. Colima is the capital of the state of Colima. The activities office at the Sierra Manzanillo booked a nice day long tour including lunch (cervazas included) , sightseeing, admission prices to museum and ruins for about $50 US. There were four touristas and an English speaking guide in a Suburban and I recommend taking this tour. |
