Nevis

oualie bay

Nevis is a small island with lots of beauty. There isn't much to do on Nevis but relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Nevis is a great place to go if you just want to get away from it all and relax.

Would We Return

Oualie Beach Resort

We stayed at the Oualie Beach Resort in Nevis. The property consists of villas located directly on Oualie Beach. The property was nicely managed and we enjoyed our screened porch. The property is not 4 star but it sits on one of the best beaches on Nevis.

We stayed in one of the newer "Premier" rooms. It was large and nicely appointed but it was set back a bit from the beach. The older and smaller units actually are closer to the water.

Oualie Beach has lots of beach chairs and hammocks which makes for a relaxing place.

Nisbet Plantation

We drove over to the Nisbet Plantation and wow what a place. Probably the nicest place on the island. Very understated and beautiful. The rooms are situated in a large grassy area with views of the ocean. The beach is pretty but it was a little windy when we were there. After seeing the Nisbet Plantation it was easy to see why it gets such rave reviews.

Mount Nevis Hotel

We also drove up to check out the Mount Nevis Hotel. The property looked very nice and the views were awesome. It was a little bit too remote for our tastes being that you have to drive up a rather long dirt road to get to the hotel. (pictures are below)

Montpelier Plantation

While at the botanical garden we stopped by to check out the Montpelier Plantation. It is located on top of a hill outside of town. The resort looked very relaxing and upscale. The restaurant is supposed to be fabulous.

Places to Eat on Nevis

Martha's Tea House

Martha's Tea House is located within the Nevis Botanical Gardens and it is operated by the folks at Montpelier plantation. The food is quite pricy, but the views are spectacular and the food quality is quite high.

Chevy's Calypso Bar and Restaurant

We ate at Chevy's twice while on Nevis. Chevy's is a casual little beach bar located on beautiful Pinney's Beach. The food was good, prices pretty low, and the location is excellent.

Shirley's Place

We happened upon Shirley's Place on our way to Pizza Beach. It looked like our kind of place so we decided to give it a try and are we glad we did. Shirley has a great little place located directly on the ocean. It is near the airport runway, but that isn't a problem since there aren't many planes landing in Nevis on a regular basis. The food was good, the prices were low, and we loved the view.

Pizza Beach

The picture to the right shows a place called Pizza Beach. It is located down the road from Shirley's. The airport runway is in the foreground. The pizza was good and the location was right on the water. Nice place for a casual pizza dinner.

Sunshine's Bar and Grill

We never ate anything at Sunshine's, but it is a nice place to hang out and have a few Caribs. Sunshine's is located directly next door from the Four Seasons. It has a "reggae" feel and everyone there is very friendly.

Nevis Botanical Gardens

A must see on Nevis is the Botanical Gardens. They are located up on a hill near the Montpelier Plantation. The entry fee was $10 USD but we felt it was worth every penny. The grounds are beautiful and there are lots of different areas to explore.

The view from the gardens is awesome. The ocean vistas make for a great backdrop to the beauty within the gardens. We had lunch at the Gardens which was wonderful. It was very expensive, but the food was delicious and the view was spectacular.

Today was moving day. We had breakfast and then packed everything for our move to Nevis. We returned our rental car to Avis and they took us to the ferry dock. We took the 10:30 AM ferry over to Nevis.
Once on Nevis we were supposed to be picked up by Noele Car Rental that Avis had arranged for us. The ferry ran late so we had to wait a while for the guy to pick us up. To make a long story short, we finally got our car and was on our way to Oualie Beach Resort by around 12:30 PM. We checked in around 1:00 PM. The facility is very nice. Our room was one of the newer, big rooms, but it was set back a bit from the water. We ate lunch at the restaurant. The burger was very good.
After a leisurely lunch we drove down to Sunshine's Beach Bar on Pinney's Beach near the Four Seasons. It was pretty quiet and they were closing early. After a Carib we made our way down the beach to Chevy's at the opposite end of the beach. We watched the sunset and enjoyed cold drinks and buffalo wings. The only negative were the biting bugs tht came out at dusk.

We ate breakfast at the hotel restaurant. We hung out at the beach in the morning reading our books. At around noon we decided to drive into Charlestown and do some shopping. We ate lunch at Unella's by the Sea. We both ordered salad. I ordered a chef salad which was served with no dressing. Dave ordered the tuna salad plate which was a scoop of tuna salad, coleslaw and potato salad service on lettuce. Overall, the lunch was just okay but the view from the restaurant was good.
When we returned to our resort we found that all the beach chairs had been taken. So we took a quick dip in the ocean and went back to our room to sit and relax in our enclosed porch.
We ate dinner at Pizza Beach. The large pizza was more than enough for two people. The pizza was good and the location was directly on the water. Good place for a casual dinner.

Today was our tour the island day. We drove around and saw several of the plantation hotels. The Mount Nevis Hotel was our first stop. They had a terrific view but they were quite far from the beach. Cottle Church was located right next door. This was the first church built in Nevis where all people regardless of race could worship together.
Nisbet Plantation was our next stop. This was the home of widow Fanny Nisbet who married Admiral Horatio Nelson. The main buildings are set back from the sea a bit but it is still quite picturesque. They have a nice beachside restaurant and swimming pool. This is probably the nicest place on the island.
We then headed back toward Charlestown and then up the hill to view the Botanical Gardens. These formal gardens are quite beautiful and the perfect way to while away a few hours. The cost is $10 USD per person but they truly are magnificent.
We decided to have lunch at Martha's Tea Room while at the gardens. The tables on the 2nd floor veranda offered great breezes and spectacular views. Dave ordered an open faced portabella goat cheese and tomato sandwich and a Carib beer. I ordered the Curried Shrimp wrap with a glass of Chardonnay. Both orders came with a wonderful green salad. The meals and service were exceptional. This was one of our most expensive meals at $65 USD, but well worth it.
After lunch we stopped at the Montpelier plantation. This 14 room Inn was the wedding site of Nelson and Nisbet. They are well known for their afternoon tea and wonderful restaurant. The restaurant at the Botanical Gardens is also operated by them.
Back in Charlestown we stopped at the Internet Cafe to check e-mail. We tried to do a little more shopping but many of the stores were closed until 2:00 PM. Afternoon siesta?.....
So we headed back to Oualie Beach just in time for a heavy rain. There would be no beach time for us today. So we read books and relaxed on the veranda.
We cleaned up around 4:30 and headed over to town to pick up a few souvenirs from the shops that were closed earlier. We got a couple of t-shirts for around $20 each and picked up a cute magnet for a friend.
On the way back from town we stopped at Sunshine's. I had one of their "Killer Bees". It was basically a rum punch for $10 EC ($3.50 USD). Dave drank Carib for $5 EC (about 2$ USD). After visiting with a few yachties for a while we meandered down to Chevy's to eat dinner. We split an appetizer of buffalo wings and split an entree of ribs. Both were very good. We were sad that the place wasn't busier because the food and service were good.

We ate breakfast at Oualie Beach and decided that today would be our beach day since the weather was nice. WE both had the French Toast which was very good.
We sat on the beach all day and finished up our books. We also observed a guy teaching people how to windsurf. He was a very good and patient teacher and had everyone up and going in no time.
There is nothing much else to write about for today because we were just lim'in.
We ate dinner at Shirley's Place by Lover's Beach and the airport. The location is very picturesque. The service was good and the good was great. I had the mutton stew on the suggestion of the server. Dave had the jerk pork. Both meals were served with rice, mixed veggies, squash, and fried plantains. We really enjoyed the ambiance. Such a nice friendly place.
Friday, February 9, 2007
Today was a transition day. We awoke and had breakfast again at the hotel. We then had the usual nightmare of packing everything to go home. Since we were spending the night in San Juan we had to make sure we had necessities and a change of clothes in our carry-ons.
We walked the beach one last time and then checked out of Oualie Beach.
We lunched at Shirley's Place. Dave had a fish sandwich and I had a cheeseburger. I wanted to have her famous "Booby Trap" drink but alas she was all out of one of the ingredients. I did have a rum punch which was very good.
If you go to Nevis you must visit Shirley. She has a great place with great food and a great personality. The island vibe is alive and well there.
At 1:30 or so we headed over to the airport to check in and do all the necessary stuff to go home.
